Keeping Secrets
My husband is celebrating his 67th birthday today. He enjoys having people fuss over him. As for me I would really prefer to stay hidden behind the stuff. I am glad that that is where I have been most of my life. I like to think, read and study. You can't do that very much if you are always seeking some sort of recognition. We have a society that has moved a long ways from anonymity. It seems that everyone wants every detail of their life out there for the whole world to see. This is so different than it was when I was much younger. Privacy was something that people really appreciated. No one wanted to know the private life of others unless they were gossips and enjoyed spreading things around. Privacy was greatly valued. It showed a respect for oneself and for the lives of others. Granted there were things hidden that should have been revealed for the safety or sanity of others, but most lives were dull and humdrum and needed not be splashed across the local newspaper or televisions.
Today, I am shocked by how little people care to protect themselves and their families from exposure to judgment and criticism from people who do not know them at all. Social media has come on board and all of those who need a few seconds of fame are making great efforts to get just that. How fleeting those seconds are and of how little consequence they ultimately will be in the eye of the public! However, the exposure or revelation of some private secret could haunt the one exposed for life. It is in the nature of human beings to remember things everything that comes to light. Those involved in the revelation really don't care but the one whose secret is revealed can be quite devastated. So what can one do in a society that can't keep its mouth shut? This is a society that loves to spread rumor and innuendo. How can one protect themselves from the prying eyes of the public?
Don't air your dirty laundry! Keep your own family private! It is not necessary to tell all you know just because you know it. I remember once that I was told "I will tell you secrets when you learn to keep one." I got the message loud and clear. From that point on, secrets were just that. I know things about people that I would never share. They were told to me privately and I held that in great respect. I want others to know that there are many people like me who do not thrive on yesterday's gossip. There are people who can keep their mouths shut but they are few and far between. Be careful who you place your confidence it. The tongue is in a wet place and it slips easily. People will share anything just to get a little attention especially if they have nothing relevant to say. It is good to be honest and upright. Another key part of those two qualities is integrity. Let us live a life filled with it. It is a virtue that is hard to find and that my friend is the real truth!
