O taste and see
I love these words "O taste and see that the Lord is good blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him. Fear the Lord, you His saints, for those who fear him lack nothing." I can remember times when my Mom would introduce a new dish at our evening meal. As little kids, we would look at her like she was trying to poison us. She would say, "Just take a taste, you will like it, I promise." Those who were adventurous would. Those who were not so brave would not. Gradually, Mom added fewer and fewer new dishes to our dinners because she found the six or seven meals that we liked the most and that is what she would cook. We began to know that Monday would be spaghetti, Tuesday would be Salmon and Macaroni and Cheese, Wednesday would be meatloaf or some combination of hamburger meat, Thursday Chicken and Friday Pizza. This was for the most part the way it went. Mom would still try occasionally to feed us a new dish but our continual rejection of her initiative caused her to give us what we thought we wanted.
There is a profound spiritual nugget in this little story. God has invited us to come to know Him. Those who do so encourage others to take their place at His wonderful table. The spiritual food that is prepared for us is so vast and varied. However, there are those who sit at the table and eat the same meal day after day. They are content with redundancy and are caught in a spiritual rut. They really do not want all that God has for us. And there are the few others with an adventurous spirit who welcome every type of gift He gives. They have tasted and seen that the Lord is indeed good. He has so many things that He desires to reveal to us through His word and through the power of the Holy Spirit.
I would like to take this thought a little further. When people eat the same food day after day, week after week it becomes a routine in their lives. The idea of changing that routine almost becomes threatening to them. They simply don't like change. However, humans do like variety and if they are not willing to grow spiritually they tend to create some type of atmosphere in which they feel they are. This type of attitude lures them away from the things of God and causes them to fixate on the lives of others. They tend to dress up the building they call the church. They tend to spend more and more time doing things that may be relevant but are in reality distractions from what Christians should be doing. They clothe themselves in self-righteousness and decide that they are the judge and jury of all other people on the planet forgetting that they too, are just another person on this planet. Not everyone on this planet may agree about many things, but everyone deserves at the very least the right to their own opinion. God gave every man, woman and child on the globe a free will. We have the right to chose what we want to believe or not believe. Others may not agree with my views and I may not agree with theirs but everyone has a right to partake of this world as they see fit as long as they are not hurting others or taking advantage of others. My old journalism professor used to say, "Your freedoms end where my nose begins." I agree with him. As Christians we need to get back to the basics that God has called us to. Those basics are sharing the story of Christ with others who desire to hear and shaking the dust from our feet as we depart from those who have no interest in what we are saying with our mouths and our lives. We are living sermons of Christ work. Can people call us good? The only approval I seek is from the one who loved and forgave me. I long to hear the words spoken to me from the mouth of my Savior, "Well-done thou good and faithful servant." and that my friend is the Real Truth.
